Hello, my grandmother built a wooden geodesic dome in Berkeley in the 70s. The original shingle design was flawed and a layer of composition shingles were installed on top of that. It needs to be re-skinned desperately and I'm a bit at a loss as to what to do. I think its about 36' in diameter and is not a perfect hemishere. I'd like to do the project myself and with help as I'm sure a roofing company would be prieced out of my range. Any advice would be great.
Thanks
Nick

Re: Roofing help in Berkeley, CA
Sat, January 5, 2008 - 12:38 PMI don't have any pictures. The original design used redwood shingles over tarpaper on top of plywood. The shingles were cut to fit the shape of the dome along the seams and no flashing was installed. This has caused leaking around all the major seams and especially the windows, which are huge pieces of plate glass that are go along the surfaces of the dome. I think that what needs to happen is that all of the redwood (and compositions) shingles need to come off and a whole new layer need to be put on with special attention to the windows.
