So those of you who have experience building EMT domes, how have you gone about flattening and crimping the ends?

Re: Crimping pipe ends
Wed, September 22, 2004 - 2:48 PMI have not gone to the extent of fabricating a EMT dome as of yet, but If you do not have a heavy hydraulic press available, I would say your best bet is to buy a large vise from a discount tool store and crush them that way. Or you can go insane trying to hammer them out... -

Re: Crimping pipe ends
Wed, September 22, 2004 - 3:48 PMI haven't done this myself, but from what I've read the options are: Use a vice, use an arbor press, or farm it out to a metal shop.
Pros/Cons: A vice will be really s l o w... A good arbor press should do the job, but a crappy one might crap out (depending on how much crimping you need to do)... A friend of mine who helped fabricate a 32' dome for the Space Virgins recommended farming it out as a metal shop will do the best job.
This is a great site with some tips on crimping:

Re: Crimping pipe ends
Thu, September 30, 2004 - 11:47 PMMy friend Ara just built a nice Hydraulic press from some steel and other parts that he fashioned together and oxy/act welded together.
good stuff, I hope to post some fotos soon and maybe he can describe how he built it.
