Re: mini-dome, cool structure
Tue, November 29, 2005 - 11:24 PMI've been using these starplates for years. I use 10ft sticks to make a 17 foot wide structure for a massage tent when I work the festivals. I am going to use 16ft sticks with reinforcements in the secondary holes to make an 800sf two story cabin. I have also used 6ft 2x2s with wingnuts on the carriage bolts for a nice tent as well. Anything over 8 ft sticks and you might need a friend to help build, but 8 ft and under can be put together by one person. What it lacks in portability is made up for by rigid stability. You can screw on sheet metal or fiberglass roofing, or plywood and sheetrock with insulation, and hang all kinds of weight on it. I wholeheartedly recommend starplates. -

Re: mini-dome, cool structure
Sun, May 4, 2008 - 7:56 PMAfter lots of research and a couple of failed experiments, I think I'm going with the starplates for Burning Man 2008. I'm glad to hear you say 8ft struts should work out okay. I was thinking of making them more portable by cutting the struts in half. Once I arrive, I'll use metal plates (I don't know what exactly they're called, but they're flat, with 10 #8 screw-sized holes for connecting timber lengths) to connect them - one plate on each side, with bolts going through the strut and tightened with a wingnut.
If portability wasn't an issue, I'd probably use plywood sheets for the walls and roof, but as it is, I'm planning to wrap a tarp tightly around the outside, and fasten a dark, breathable fabric to the inside with eyelets and screws.
