General question but would love comments from people that have built them. I'm looking at building plans presently to build my first home.

    Dome homes are extraordinarily safe.

My family built one in Wisconsin when I was growing up. Our cousins owned the neighboring property. The homes were in 80 acres of forest. We moved away and sold the dome and the property it was on years ago, but my cousins still own the property next door.

Anyhow, last year a tornado hit. It took down about 85% of the trees on the 80 acres, and tore the roof off my cousin's log home, and blew out all the windows in his home. It also threw a tree down on one wall, and damaged the wall pretty badly.

The dome had 2 large trees dropped on it, but the only damage was some damaged screens.

I've read stories about domes being the only standing structure left after a tornado hit, after a hurricane, etc. They can withstand tremendous pressures that would rip a "box" type house to shreds. The only stronger structure would be a pyramid.

The pyramid is stronger. A three sided pyramid has the most surface area per volume than any other polyhedra (3D shape)

A house loses all its heat through surface area.

A sphere has the least amount of surface area per volume.

When you take that into consideration not only is the Dome strong, but it is very efficient.

hey check out the articles and associated comments posted under the Topic: "Dome vs. Ivan the Terrible".

Read about how the dome was the only structure standing after Hurricane Ivan came through and remodeled the rest of the neighborhood. Read how a news crew slept in the dome, the only safe place on the island relativly undisturbed, except for some howling wind and a little water seeping through the windows (mind you it is a dome not a submarine, its not intended to be gale force wind proof when it comes to some water seeping through windows).
